Equifax Just Won a Contract with the IRS and Everyone is as Confused as You Are

It seems impossible, but it’s true. Equifax just won a $7.25 million award to verify taxpayer identities and help prevent fraud for the IRS. Considering the fact that a recent Equifax data breach exposed the personal information of up to 145 million Americans, this is a pretty miraculous feat.

Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) commented saying, “It’s irresponsible for the IRS to turn over millions in taxpayer dollars to a company that has yet to offer a succinct answer on how at least 145 million Americans had personally identifiable information exposed.” Fair enough.

If nothing else, this confirms the fact that the federal government moves in odd ways. (If you’re thinking “odd” is an understatement, you’re not wrong.) It’s understandable that this kind of head-scratching behavior can make innovative young companies feel defeated.

That being said, it is NOT the time to give up if you’re a small business contractor. The federal government is vast, strange, and confusing. But the only surefire way to win is to stay in the game. So keep those chins up and those shoulders set—if Equifax can, you can too.
